This past Tuesday, the Big Spring Cross Country Team traveled to Lubbock to compete at the Regional Meet held at Mae Simmons Park. Region I consists of 52 schools, with the top 24 teams qualifying for the regional competition.
The Steers competed in cool 50-degree weather, with the girls racing first at 9:00 a.m. and the boys following at 9:30 a.m. The Lady Steers had an impressive day, recording three personal records. Danica Alvarado led the team with a 70th-place finish, followed by Luna Jimenez (74th), Bergan Pinkley (80th), Kandace Gonzales (103rd), Luse Hakobyan (123rd), and Lynzi Arrieta (170th). Their efforts secured a 13th-place team finish out of 24 schools.
The boys followed with an outstanding performance of their own, earning six personal records. Ines “CJ” Gonzales led the charge with a 9th-place finish, followed by Jacob Marquez (12th), Josh Calixto (16th), Eddy Quezada (17th), Thomas Sooter (39th), Loc Ramirez (40th), and Nathan Garza (44th). Their strong showing propelled the team to an impressive 2nd-place finish overall.
With that result, the boys have earned a trip to the UIL State Cross Country Meet, where they will compete on Saturday, November 1st, at 8:45 a.m. at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.
