Text to 911 service is coming to Howard County beginning September 15, 2025. The Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission (PBRPC) will launch the service with three major wireless carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. If users attempt to use this service when it is not supported, they will receive a message telling them to call 911. Calling is still the preferred mode of communication, but the new Text to 911 service can provide help when it is dangerous to call or when the person is hard of hearing or speech impaired.
When using the Text to 911 service, users are advised to provide their precise location and a clear description of the emergency. Using slang, abbreviations or emojis is discouraged to avoid confusion. It is also important to note that it is illegal and dangerous to text while driving. Drivers should pull over to a safe location while texting.
Residents seeking more information about the Text-to-911 service can visit the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission website at www.pbrpc.org.
