The University of Texas Permian Basin Falcons continued their historic season with a decisive 28–14 victory over Angelo State University this past Saturday in San Angelo. The win not only preserved UTPB’s undefeated record but also marked a breakthrough moment for the program, toppling a top-five opponent and ending Angelo State’s dominant conference streak.
From the opening whistle, the Falcons set the tone. Quarterback Kanon Gibson led the charge with three rushing touchdowns in the first half, giving UTPB a commanding 21–7 lead at the break. Gibson’s performance was nothing short of stellar, racking up nearly 300 passing yards and four total touchdowns on the night.
The Falcon defense matched the offense’s intensity, holding Angelo State to just 69 rushing yards and forcing key stops throughout the game. A third-quarter touchdown from the Rams narrowed the gap, but UTPB responded with a late scoring drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass to TJ McKenzie, sealing the win and silencing the home crowd.
With the victory, UTPB improves to 5–0 overall and 3–0 in Lone Star Conference play. The Falcons have now defeated three top-10 teams this season, solidifying their reputation as one of the most dangerous squads in Division II football.
Next up, the Falcons return home to Ratliff Stadium for a high-stakes matchup against No. 16-ranked Central Washington University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. this Saturday, and the energy in Odessa is building fast.
UTPB’s rise is more than just a winning streak — it’s a signal that West Texas football is ready to compete on a national stage.
