BIG SPRING, TX – The prosecution continued to call witnesses today in the 118th District Court in Howard County for the murder trial of Colten Hughes, who is accused of shooting his grandmother Leah Hughes, 67, at her residence at 1800 Brent Dr. in Big Spring on December 27, 2023.
Testimonies today confirmed that Colten had purchased a Bond Arm firearm described as a “Snake Slayer” from a San Angelo gun shop in Feb. 2023. This model uses .410 gauge ammo, the same as the “slug” that was found near Leah’s deceased body in her garage.
Lead investigator for the case Detective Christopher Dominguez testified about items that were found after a search warrant was executed for Colten’s residence in Trophy Club, TX, which included multiple firearms, several boxes of ammo, including the .410 gauge, but the “Snake Slayer” was not among the firearms found. Plus, photos of Colten’s text messages with Leah and photos of multiple royalty checks made out to Leah Hughes were shared.
Other witnesses involved in today’s session included Leah’s son and Colten’s father Wes Hughes, son-in-law Bucky Crenshaw, a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, and a jail administrator with the Howard County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to surveillance videos, and photos of Colten’s phone, the jury also viewed more BSPD footage that tested the notifications of the security system at the Brent Dr. residence. They also listened to multiple inmate phone calls that Colten made while in jail.
The trial will continue tomorrow morning at 9 AM.
