BIG SPRING, TX — Cosden FCU held their annual event CU 4 Reality Fair earlier this month.
During this event, student participants experience a hands-on event that propels them through the personal financial management process. This includes career selection, budgeting for housing, transportation, luxuries, and more.
According to Laurie Light, President of Cosden FCU, approximately 300 to 350 students came to the event.
“It’s funny to watch them go through thinking that they’re making enough money each month to support their expenses and then by the time they get through the end of their budget they realize ‘I have a deficit. I didn’t make enough money this month to buy all of these items. We have to go back and choose a different car, a different house.’ They have to adjust that budget,” said Light.
She went on to say that budgeting is all about how you manage it and what can you do to keep a positive account balance at the end of each month.
Morgan McWilliams, Big Spring High School Senior Counselor, told KBest News it’s extremely important for students to get a taste of reality and she felt that a lot of them had an eye-opening experience during the event.
