On the 27th of December 2023, Leah Hughes White/Female 67 years of age, was found deceased at her residence in the 1800 block of Brent Drive. Big Spring Police Department officers responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. The preliminary investigation believed Hughes to have died of a fall causing injury though an autopsy was requested.
On the 29th of December 2023, the Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division was informed that the medical examiner’s office has determined Hughes death was a result of a gunshot wound. Detectives immediately secured a search warrant for the Hughes residence and began further investigating the death. The Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division have worked with multiple agencies investigating the death of Hughes for the past several weeks.
On the 6th of February 2024, Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division presented an arrest warrant affidavit to a Magistrate, in which it was found probable cause existed for the arrest of Colten Hughes White/Male 26 years of age, for the Murder of his grandmother Leah Hughes.
On the 6th of February 2024, with the assistance of the Texas Department of Public Safety, DPS TX Rangers Division and the Trophy Club Police Department, the Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division arrested Colten Hughes for the offense of Murder a Felony 1 offense. Colten Hughes was arrested and charged with Murder after a traffic stop at the intersection of Parkview Drive and Durango Drive in Trophy Club Texas.
This continues to be an ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time.
