BIG SPRING, TX — The Ports-to-Plains Conference was held this week at Hotel Settles. During the conference U.S. Senator Ted Cruz spoke to attendees about his role in championing the I-27 designation for the Ports-to-Plains Corridor, which would provide efficient transportation of goods and people from Mexico, through west Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, and ultimately Canada. This means that the project is now allowed to apply for funding to bring these existing roadways up to interstate standards as a federal 4-lane highway.
Senator Cruz advised that he became involved in it four to five years ago but the endeavor has been in the works for two decades. Since his involvement with the project, Cruz has been able to work across the aisle with Democrats for bipartisan support.
According to Cruz, the projections for what I-27 will produce is a $55 billion project, projected to grow the Texas GDP by $17.2 billion. It’s projected to create 178,000 construction jobs and roughly 17,000 long term jobs all along I-27.
