BIG SPRING, TX — On Monday morning, Big Spring Jr. High welcomed U.S. Olympian Rose Magers-Powell to their gymnasium for a Presidents Day Volleyball Clinic. Magers, originally from Big Spring, won the silver medal in Volleyball with the USA National Women’s Team at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.
Magers-Powell told KBest News that she had done Volleyball clinics for Big Spring in years past with Coach Tracy Pierce, but after she left Magers-Powell was unable to connect with the coaching staff until recently.
“When I come home, I try to do something when I get a chance to if I can contact someone to let me come in to do something. So, I sent an email out to all the coaches and told them I would be in town, and with it being a holiday I’d be more than happy to do a clinic for them,” said Magers-Powell.
Coach Stormi Smith told KBest News that having Magers-Powell available to train is an amazing opportunity.
“Even when I posted it on Facebook for the community to see, I was like – How often would you ever be able to be trained by Olympic silver medalist? – It’s astounding,” said Smith.
Coach Smith told KBest News that she had taken camps with Magers-Powell in 5th and 6th grade.
“To have her come back and have her see me as a coach and see how I’ve grown and developed, that’s a great opportunity for the kids and the coaching staff to see how she’s watched us grow from when we were younger because she’s from here,” continued Coach Smith.
Coaches are currently working with Big Spring Athletic Director Cannon McWilliams to coordinate dates for Magers-Powell to return this summer for a 4-day Volleyball clinic with various age groups.
