BIG SPRING, TX — With the buzz of the new season in the air and expectations running high, the Big Spring Steers are gearing up for another season. With 18 returning players this season, Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Cannon McWilliams and his team are looking toward a district championship win as the goal.
McWilliams says that this year’s defensive and offensive lines are potentially the best he’s ever seen.
“This will be the best defensive line we’ve had since I’ve been here, that’s going on nine years. This has the potential to be the best offense and defense lines that we’ve had, and we’re as big as we’ve ever been. We’re gonna average about 260 and 270 across the offensive line and we’re gonna be just about as big and athletic on the defense line,” he continued.
Two standout linemen returning this season are RJ Gomez and Jestin Burchett. According to Coach McWilliams, Gomez was the Preseason Defensive MVP for this district and a three year starter at defensive end. On the offensive side, Jestin Burchett, Center and also a regional powerlifter, had no previous experience in the center position until last year but he’s excelled and only continues to improve.
The Steers kick off their season August 29th in El Paso facing Riverside. Listen to KBEST 95.7 to catch all the Steers games.
