BIG SPRING, TEXAS – On July 3 at noon, the citizens of Big Spring are invited to experience a live reading of the Declaration of Independence in front of the Howard County Courthouse at 300 S. Main St. The reading will take around 15 minutes and people are
encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
The reading will be performed by the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Since 2010, criminal defense lawyers across the Lone Star State have gathered on courthouse steps each July to publicly read the Declaration of Independence.
The tradition is unlike any other in the nation. Attorneys will read all three parts of the Declaration of Independence.
“It is important to recognize all that our forefathers faced and the sacrifices they made to establish our great nation,” said attorney Robert Miller who helps to organize the annual event. “What they did by declaring our independence from England was punishable by death.”
Miller said he believes it is every American’s patriotic duty to be familiar with the Declaration of Independence. This event is a great opportunity to experience the historical document through the power of the spoken word.
Thomas Jefferson drafted the statement between June 11 and 28, 1776, with input from other founding fathers. The draft was then presented to Congress following the July 2 adoption of the independence section of the Lee Resolution. The congressional revision process took place July 3 and 4. The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It was put on parchment and delegates began signing the declaration on Aug. 2, 1776.
