BIG SPRING, TX — Results for the May 3, 2025 School election were canvassed at last night’s meeting of the Big Spring ISD Board of Trustees. A quorum was not present but enough board members were present to canvas the results. Candidates winning their respective races are as follows:
District 2 – Jesse Salazar, incumbent
District 5 – Bert Otto
District 6 – Jon Islas
Salazar was not present for the meeting, but Otto, Islas, and Fabian Serrano, who was unopposed for District 7, were all sworn in to take their position in the board.
Islas told KBest News that he was encouraged to run by friends and family. He has a background in working with the community as a police officer and is willing to work with the district to make things better for the kids.
Otto has 30 years of experience as an educator, 17 of which were with BSISD. He told KBest News that he wants to bring a positive spin to the board and eliminate some agendas.
There’s a lot of good, positive things going on in Big Spring, and I don’t think those were being brought out. That’s something that I want to focus on and keep going. When I first got here they were ready to close the doors here. TEA was ready to come in. We’ve made a lot of great strides here in Big Spring. I was part of that working as a teacher to get those things out and we’re doing great now and I just don’t think those were being exemplified,” said Otto.
He went on to say that he looks forward to working with other board members and staff to keep the momentum going.
“We’re nowhere near we want to be, but we’re so much further from where we were. That’s in all aspects – not just in testing, the scores, and the data. Just in a lot of aspects from where we were,” he continued. He went on to say he thinks they can continue to make more great strides in the district.
