McMahon-Wrinkle Airport was recognized by the Texas Department of Transportation
The McMahon-Wrinkle Airport was recognized by the Texas Department of Transportation as the 2025 Local/ Basic Airport of the Year Award for the State of Texas.
“I’m so proud of the airport earning this accolade,” said Airport Director Mike Feeley. “The City of Big Spring, my dedicated staff and the Airport Advisory Board have all worked tirelessly to provide the support needed to earn this honor.”
Since Feeley was hired three years ago, the airport has gone through a significant transformation under his leadership including the completion of an airport master plan, an airport layout plan, and an updated property exhibit. The doors on Hangar 25 have also been recently replaced with 80-foot wide bifold doors, and the Runway 6/24 reconstruction project is currently in the design phase with construction scheduled for next fiscal year.
The airport director said he is working hard to ensure the citizens of Big Spring are aware of the full potential and the significance of the city’s airport, especially considering the future potential with the introduction of the Port to Plains Corridor, which will border the airport on the west side. Feeley said he views the airport as one of the greatest public utilities the City of Big Spring owns.
“The airport is an economic engine that through job creation and direct and indirect economic stimuli that, if developed responsibly, can significantly enhance the future opportunities for the city and citizens of Big Spring,” Feeley said.
McMahon-Wrinkle Airport is the second largest airport in the Permian Basin with the current runway at 8,800 feet long, only 700 feet shorter than Midland International Airport, and future improvements are planned to take it to 10,000 feet. The airport has been working with several entities who are proposing to relocate or begin operations in Big Spring, which could potentially bring new jobs to the city.
Other accomplishments at the airport over the last three years include:
- Completion of an airport striping and marking project.
- Renovations to the Terminal Building, including the addition of covered parking.
- Environmental abatement and demolition of the several obsolete facilities
- Developing a jogging/walking/biking path on the airport’s west side for citizens to exercise.
- Holding numerous free events for the citizens including “Blowout at the Bunker” Drag Races and “Fun Day on the Runway.”
- Revitalizing administrative processes.
- Assuming duties as the Fixed Base Operator/aircraft fueling entity.
- Programming sewer and water upgrades to include an elevated water tank on the airport’s west side.
- Programming an airport lighting upgrade project.
- Replacing the airport’s rotating beacon.
