BIG SPRING, TX — During this week’s meeting of the Big Spring City Council, Scott Taylor with the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Committee, it was pointed out that the Vietnam Veteran Memorial has gradually lost some of its luster since its inception in 1991. The pictures in the chapel have faded and fallen down, dead grass due to significant plumbing and sprinkler issues in the area, and the area has sustained numerous issues of vandalism and security related challenges.
Taylor advised that after speaking with numerous people in the community, they would like to create a Howard County All Veterans Memorial adjacent to the Hangar 25 Air Museum. This would recognize all the veterans from Howard County from the Civil War to present, from Coast Guard to Space Force. It would also provide a synergistic space adjacent to Hagar 25 Air museum serving as a draw for additional tourism for both the Hangar and the Memorial.
Council approved the request to move the Vietnam Veteran Memorial from SWCD (Southwest College for the Deaf) land to Airpark land directly adjacent to the Hangar 25 Air Museum. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee will also begin detailed planning, fundraising, and work closely with Mike Feeley, Airport Director, to complete this goal.
