BIG SPRING, TX — Pathway Academy, the new charter school that will soon open in Big Spring, recently announced that they would be adding an athletic program to their school. Dr. Thaddeus McCalister, Superintendent for Pathway Academy, advised that now their students would not have to choose between academics and athletics.
“Our goal is to make sure that students don’t have to choose between academics and athletics. We don’t want that for kids. We want them to come our school and feel like they are receiving everything that they want. When I talked to the board, they said if you can make it happen let’s make it happen,” said Dr. McCalister.
Pathway Academy will open its doors to students in Fall 2025 and will include football, volleyball, and girls and boys basketball in their first year. During the first year, the charter school will be available to students in grades 7-9th. As the students progress through their schooling, additional grades will be added each year until they are serving grades 7-12. The goal is each grade level will be capped at 50 students, for a total of 150 students in their first year. According to Dr. McCalister, there are 66 students in various grades that have submitted an Intent to Enroll form with the school.
If there are over 50 students in each grade level that are requesting enrollment, a lottery will be used to determine which students are selected. Originally, the lottery for Pathway Academy was set for March 2025, but that date has been tentatively moved up to mid-December 2024.
Chief Financial Officer Tommy Moore advised that there’s still time for families to submit their Intent to Enroll form. The form can be found at PathwayHC.org, or on their Facebook for Pathway Academy.
