BIG SPRING, TX — Last month, Howard County Commissioners approved a donation from The Alamo Letter Society to place a large bronze plaque containing Col. William Barret Travis’s Alamo “Victory or Death” letter at the Howard County Courthouse.
The Alamo Letter Society is an organization with a mission to educate current and future Texans about their forefathers’ armed struggle for Freedom and Liberty. Their plan is to do this in all 254 Texas Courthouses to honor the two leading Tejanos of the Texas Revolution, Jose Antonio Navarro and Juan Seguín.
The county is responsible for providing a display stand and organizing a dedication ceremony. Earlier this week, it was announced that the bronze plaque would be placed near the rock garden north of the courthouse. The dedication ceremony is expected to involve the local school districts in some way. It is tentatively scheduled for mid-October 2024.
