Local funeral home owner Bill Myers was recently presented with a Lifetime Achievement award from the West Texas Funeral Directors Association. Myers said he had been a member of the organization for approximately 38 years and was humbled and very surprised to receive it.
Myers told KBest News that as a child he was fascinated by ambulances and funeral cars.
“About the eighth grade, I began to think I might like to do that for a living. I have no doubt at all that God called me to do this. This is my life and my ministry,” said Myers.
In 1965 during his freshman year in college Myers began working at a funeral home. After a few weeks, he decided to attend mortuary school. He graduated and served a 2-year apprenticeship, but during the middle of the apprenticeship he was drafted into the military. When he returned from the U.S. Army, he completed the apprenticeship, got his license in 1969 and has been in Big Spring ever since.
He’s owned Myers and Smith Funeral Home since 1983 and says his favorite part of the industry is serving people.
“We just try to take care of each family. We’ve given the best service we can and treat each family the way that we would want our own families treated. I think that’s a good code for living your life,” said Myers.
Myers and Smith Funeral home is located at 310 E. 24th St. in Big Spring.
