BIG SPRING, TX — During Tuesday night’s meeting of the Big Spring City Council, it was announced that Diane Yanez, current Council Member for District 2, was unopposed for the elected position. Since she had no opposition, she was deemed elected to office and will serve her new term from May 2024 to May 2027. This will be her second consecutive term.
Council members approved the first reading to amend the budget in order to add a position to the sports complex staff with a vote of 4-3, with Councilmembers Cody Hughes, District 3, Gloria McDonald, District 4, and Mayor Robert Moore voting against.
A fire billing ordinance was approved so that the city can pursue an additional stream of revenue through the Fire Department. This will establish new and additional fees for rescues, fire investigations, water and back country incidents, and fires outside of the city limits.
An interlocal cooperation agreement with South Plains Association of Government (SPAG) was approved for the Downtown Revitalization Program. This would allow them to apply for a $500,000 grant that could be used for a variety of things that could include demolition, sidewalks, lighting, water and sewer. The city’s cost of participation in this agreement is $17,500.
Council members approved of a mural to be painted by Big Spring Little League and the Big Spring High School Art Club on the Concession Stand at the Roy Anderson Sports Complex.
