Big Spring, TX— The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Walk took place Monday night, led by Pastor Michael Smith of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. The 1.5 mile walk began on the corner of MLK Blvd. and Gregg St. outside Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and headed west, ending at Knollwood Heights Apartments off FM 700. Approximately 20-25 participants gathered to take part in this year’s walk, despite below freezing temperatures. Many of them paraded behind walkers in their cars and then gathered outside the apartment homes for a brief speech and prayer held by Pastor Smith.
Ramon Olgin, a walker participating in the event, told KBest that walking a mile in the cold is nothing compared to what Martin Luther King, Jr. endured and is a good way to pay respect to MLK and honor our civil rights. Olgin participates in the walk every year that he is in town.
Pediatrician Dr. Joseph Chavez and his wife, Lupe Chavez also walked in the event. Dr. Chavez said that he has always admired Dr. Martin Luther King. “As a Hispanic, Mexican-American physician, because of [Dr. King], I’m here serving the community of Big Spring, TX,” Dr. Chavez said. Lupe added that Dr. King gave people the path to rights, freedoms, and equality.
In his closing speech, Pastor Smith encouraged participants to educate themselves and get out and vote.
