HOWARD COUNTY, TX — Yesterday, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office announced that it was requesting assistance from the public in obtaining information in an animal, cruelty case. In a video posted to their Facebook page a black 4-door vehicle can be seen driving away from a dog. According to Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker, the full video shows the vehicle, dropping off the dog, and then driving away as the dog chases after it.
Sheriff Parker advised that a vehicle has been identified, but they’re trying to get more information on it and on the dog. It is unclear if the dog has been rescued, but Sheriff Parker said there is placement available for the dog.
“We’re trying to get a hold of the dog. We do have placement for it and so if anybody knows the where
abouts of the dog would greatly appreciate that, and if you know more about the suspect vehicle or the person driving the car we would love to have that information,” said Parker.
He went on to say that the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t usually get a lot of calls about people dumping dogs in the county, but they know it happens often. He said that if they know there’s something going on, they’ll pursue it.
Sheriff Parker told KBest News that people must understand that if they decide to become a pet owner, they are responsible for that pet for the rest of its life.
“Once you pick up the pet, once you own the pet, you own it for the rest of its life. You know, when they’re puppies they’re cute. They’re gonna grow up [and] they’re not gonna be cute little puppies anymore but they’re still very loving animals. Have it spayed or neutered and be prepared to take care of that pet for the rest of its life. They deserve that, just like our children do,” he explained.
Abandoning a pet is classified as animal cruelty and is a Class A misdemeanor. According to Sheriff Parker, it is punishable by a $1,000 fine and up to a year in county jail.
