BIG SPRING, TX — The West Texas VA will host its next Tele-Town Hall this coming Tuesday, November 21st at 5 pm. The entire leadership team from the West Texas VA will be on the phone with subject matter experts on everything from whole health to prosthetics to enrollment eligibility. Veterans and caregivers can call in to the Tele-Town Hall by dialing 833-305-1700.
The first in-person Outreach and Town Hall event to take place since the onset of COVID will occur on Tuesday, November 28th from 4-6 pm at the VFW in Sweetwater. Mike Cole, Public Affairs Officer with the West Texas VA, told KBEST they plan to have more outreach events in communities where the VA hasn’t been before.
“We need to get the VA out to where our veterans are – where they live, work, and play – especially in rural communities like West Texas,” he said. “We have veterans in the oil field; they’re out driving trucks. They can’t be in Big Spring readily. They can’t be in Abilene readily.”
If you have recommendations for the VA to come to your town, you can call the main hospital phone number and reach Mike Cole at extension 7200.
Cole also informed KBEST of the new policy for World War II veterans. These veterans can now receive care and medications with no copays and no eligibility requirements.
The VA also has an Adaptive Sports Program. They offer everything from cycling to hiking, fishing, and yoga for veterans with mobility issues. They even have a device that allows
wheelchair- bound veterans to play golf. December 1st starts open registration for the Veteran Summer Sports Clinic. Registration is online – you can find the link to apply on the West Texas
VA Facebook page. This event takes place every year in a different location. This year, it will be held in San Diego, CA and will encompass all kinds of sporting events from surfing to cycling.
