BIG SPRING, TX — Last month, the Howard County Commissioners approved a property tax rate for the county. The total tax rate for this year is $0.208716/ $100 valuation (approximately $0.21 per $100 valuation). According to County Judge Randy Johnson, that is a reduction of approximately 3 cents from last year’s rate. This is the No New Revenue rate, which, in theory, provides the county with the same amount of money as last year that will be used to pay maintenance, operations, and debts.
“The tax rate goes down and the only way the tax rate gets to go down is when the values go up, but you put those two things together we’re operating on basically the same budget that we had last year,” said Judge Johnson.
He advised that last year, Howard County had the 13th lowest tax rate out of 254 counties in the state of Texas.
