BIG SPRING, TX – Many people gathered at the Howard County Courthouse yesterday to say goodbye and good luck to Howard County Judge Kathryn Wiseman, who’ll soon hang up her judge’s robe for a final time. This is her last week in office as County Judge, an office she’s held for 8 years. Prior to that she served as Justice of the Peace for 11 years.
Judge Wiseman told KBest News that she’s ready for retirement and had never intended to be the County Judge for more than two terms.
“I have left the county in great hands. Randy Johnson is gonna do a great job as County Judge. I have appreciated all the support and all the love I’ve gotten from the community for all these many years from Justice of the Peace to County Judge. This is a great place to be and a great place to be from,” she said.
After serving as an elected official for 19 years, Wiseman’s excited to start her next adventure, which is teaching kindergarten for Big Spring ISD at Moss Elementary. She said she loves children and hopes she can teach the kids how to read by the time they enter 1st grade.
“I found out from being over juvenile court that it’s very very important for the children to learn how to read. Many of the kids in juvenile court can barely read and barely write their names, and they were not successful in school because they didn’t learn how to read. If I can just teach a few kids to read, that will keep them out of trouble for the rest of their lives, [and] make them successful,” explained Wiseman.
Judge Wiseman will be replaced by newly elected County Judge Randy Johnson. He’ll get sworn into office on Sunday, Jan. 1st at 3 PM at the Howard County Courthouse, 300 S. Main in Big Spring.
