Earlier this month, former educators Justin Matthew Turney and Matthew Yanez recently faced sentencing for previous incidents that occurred while working in the school system.
Turney, former Principal at Stanton High School, was indicted for Indecency with a Child, a second-degree felony offense, in July 2021. This month he was sentenced to Pretrial Diversion. This means that Turney has not been convicted, but has been placed on probation. If he successfully completes his probation, he won’t have a conviction on his record.
Yanez, former baseball coach at Big Spring High School, had been arrested for Improper Relationship between Educator and Student, a second-degree felony offense, in April 2022. Last week he was sentenced to deferred adjudication probation. If Yanez successfully completes his 3 years of probation, the charge will be dismissed.
According to District Attorney Hardy Wilkerson, if both Turney and Yanez successfully complete their probation sentence, neither will be convicted of a felony offense but the charge will still show on their record.
District Attorney Hardy Wilkerson told KBest News that neither Turney nor Yanez are working for their former school district and appropriate paperwork has been submitted to teaching credential agencies.
