BIG SPRING, TX — The abandoned property along Interstate 20, near mile marker 176 in Big Spring, known as the old Ramada Inn/former GEO Interstate Prison, may soon be gone.
The City of Big Spring has put out a request for proposal (RFP) to have heavy developers bid on the property for development. Proposals will be received until Jul 11, 2022. John Medina, Assistant City Manager for the City of Big Spring, told KBest News that the city has been approached by some developers for the property. To make it more marketable, the City of Big Spring will do the asbestos abatement and demolition of the property.
The idea is that once the property is demolished, the developer will be able to build something that will eventually be able to bring in revenue to the city by adding it to the tax roll.
Initial concern from some of the council members was why would they move forward on the project if it hasn’t been sold yet, but Medina explained that there will actually be two phases to the project – selling the property and demolishing the structure as part of the sale. These phases could run concurrently, but overall the city will make sure that there is interest in the property and that the City Council has all the information they need to go into those negotiations.
Medina told KBest News that they are still developing the request for bids on the demolition side of the project, but they’ll release that in approximately 2 weeks.
