BIG SPRING, TX — During last night’s meeting of the Big Spring Housing Authority, a quorum of BSHA Commissioners voted 3-0 to hire Sharon Fritz, former Executive Director of the BSHA, as an independent contractor executive director at will.
No other action was taken during the meeting.
Fritz has 17 years of experience with the BSHA and was employed with the organization until she resigned in January 2022. Sheila Johnson was served as interim executive director and Fritz was later contracted for services to assist the BSHA.
After Johnson recently resigned, the decision was made by Commissioners to hire Fritz again because, according to Melinda Stapp, Vice-Chair for the BSHA Board of Commissioners, they needed someone on board now.
Big Spring Mayor Shannon Thomason stated that although there had been complaints about Fritz in the past, she quit on her own. He stated that he had no issue with her returning to work with the BSHA, as long as the people that need the benefits are receiving the benefits.
“That’s all any of us are concerned about, that the citizens of Big Spring who receive those Section 8 benefits and VASH [VA Supportive Housing] benefits, get them and are treated as human beings as they do so,” said Thomason.
According to Thomason, Fritz would be brought back to help the Public Housing Authority with day-to-day operations.
“As far as I know the search for a full-time executive director is still ongoing, and will continue to be so and other options are being looked at as well,” continued Thomason.
Big Spring Housing Authority provides housing assistance to low-income residents through the management of the area’s Housing Choice Voucher Program – Section 8. This program assists very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. It is income based and the eligibility guidelines are set by HUD, which is the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
