The Disabled American Veterans will hold the 12th Annual Dove Hunt on Saturday September 20th at 6 pm at the First Methodist Church. This ceremony caps off a weekend that four selected veterans spend hunting and shooting skeet. This weekend is designed for the veterans to be able to leave their demons behind. The four selected veterans will receive gifts from the citizens of Big Spring and Quilts of Valor from the Chatty Stitchers of Tyler. They also receive a Texas flag from Dawn Buckingham, Texas Land Commissioner that was flown over the Alamo in their honor. They are gifted an American flag from Jodi Arrington, congressman.
The weekend begins for the veterans at Moss Creek Ranch, where they spend the night. On Friday, they are fed breakfast by Pioneer Weed Control and then go to the Wishbone Ranch in Stanton for some dove hunting. Al’s BBQ feeds the vets lunch. They then return to the Wishbone to trap and shoot skeet. A local family caters dinner, hosted by Damien Tarpley, and the vets return to Moss Creek Ranch to spend the night.
Saturday morning breakfast is supplied by the Howard County Republicans. They have some more opportunity to hunt at the Wishbone before going to Moss Creek Ranch. They then spend time playing rifle golf and shooting a Gatalin gun. The closing ceremonies are that night.
If you would like to purchase a gift for these veterans or to make a donation to the DAV please contact Mike Tarpley at 432-556-2227.
