BIG SPRING -As Friday night lights are shining across West Texas, fans should remember Senate Bill 2929. This bill allows judges or referees to eject fans that are acting unruly from any UIL or school sponsored event. The officials can now eject fans with no previous verbal warning. Sponsored by Brandon Creighton, the bill aims to crack down on escalating tensions and inappropriate behavior at sporting events. Governor Abbott signed the bill into law May 27, 2025.
Previously referees had no legal authority to eject fans. Often, school administrators or law enforcement had to step in. If a fan is asked to leave an event, the decision is final under Texas law. Cooperation with this new bill helps to model sportsmanship for students and protects the integrity of sports programs.
