BIG SPRING, TX — Big Spring families hid from the afternoon sun and lined down the block Tuesday when doors opened on the 3rd annual Joe Bright Basketball School Supplies giveaway.
Beginning at 2 pm, students were welcomed into the Goliad Intermediate lobby to fill grocery bags with needed items, including paper, pencils and specialized equipment like clear backpacks and wired earbuds for incoming fifth and sixth graders.
“I relate it back to myself, coming from South side Chicago,” Coach Joseph Bright said.
“Having these opportunities for the kids is giving back.”
Bright, who works as a distinct gym teacher on top of his coaching opportunities, said he paid for the school supplies out of his own pocket.
“I’m not here to get rich or anything,” Bright said. “I’m not financially hurting.”
Unfortunately, festivities came to a premature end when paper ran out. The event which was supposed to run until 4PM had to close its doors 12 minutes after opening.
”We wasn’t expecting half the city to come out,” Bright said.
However, other materials remain in stock and the team hopes to try again on Friday in the same place, 1801 Goliad Street.
“At the end of the day, I’m not looking for a return,” Bright said. “You can see in their faces the impact that it has.”
Bright requested attendees bring their own bag to carry supplies on Friday. For more information on tomorrow’s distribution, visit the Facebook page for Joe Bright Basketball Training.
