BIG SPRING, TX — The murder trial for Colten Hughes continued today in the 118th District Court in Howard County. He is accused of murdering his grandmother 67-year-old Leah Hughes on December 27, 2023 at her residence located at 1800 Brent Dr. in Big Spring, TX.
The prosecution presented multiple witness testimonies. Two of which were members of the Big Spring Police Department who responded to the scene, BSPD Chief Chad Williams who was notified about the scene, and another officer who had written a subpoena for AT&T for the investigation. BSPD officer testimonies stated that upon arrival, Leah was discovered in a pool of blood and it was noted as an unattended death. It appeared that she had fallen and officers found a small piece of metal that appeared to be a “slug” near the body but they did not see any obvious gunshot wounds on Leah nor was there an exit wound. There were multiple theories that were developed during the preliminary investigation, but it was unclear how she died.
Justice of the Peace Mike Averette, Pct. 1, Pl. 2, testified that he was called to the scene and he called for an autopsy of the body. This autopsy would later determine that Leah Hughes had died from a gunshot wound.
Other witnesses confirmed that videos submitted into evidence from Dec. 27, 2023 were from their security cameras and unaltered. Plus, a witness from the San Angelo Claybird Association was interviewed regarding his relationship with Colten Hughes and how well Colten was familiar with guns, a specific model of a gun that had been in Colten’s possession.
