BIG SPRING, TX — Yesterday, the murder trial of Colten Hughes began in the 118th District Court in Howard County. Hughes was arrested in February of 2024 and charged with the murder of his grandmother, 67-year-old Big Spring resident, Leah Hughes. Ms. Hughes was found deceased at her residence in the 1800 block of Brent Drive on December 27, 2023. According to the Big Spring Police Department, the medical examiner determined that her death was a result of a gunshot wound.
The prosecution and the defense both made opening statements to the jury. The first six* witnesses for the State of Texas (prosecution) took the stand to testify. This included a communications director at the Howard County Sheriff’s Office who took the 911 call; Kara Crenshaw, the daughter of Leah Hughes; a firearm and tool marking examiner with the Texas DPS; and an ID technician, a former officer and a corporal with the Big Spring Police Department who responded to the scene. The jury heard the 911 call placed by Kara and saw photos of the crime scene that were presented as evidence by the State.
District Attorney Josh Hamby advised during the opening statement that the prosecution had at least 25 witnesses. Testimonies will continue tomorrow at 9 AM.
