BIG SPRING, TX — Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring celebrated its 50th anniversary yesterday. Part of the celebration was the unveiling of a new logo and mission, vision, and values. The artwork for the logo, which features Scenic Mountain and Signal Peak, was designed by Gloria McDonald, member of the SMMC Board of Trustees.
SMMC CEO Mallik Chowdary Yenigella, told KBest News that this was a proud moment for him.
“It’s a legacy and it’s a historic moment. Not a lot of people get to celebrate that and so [I’m] happy to celebrate with our community who trust us and who has been walking through these doors where we were able to care for them,” said Yenigella.
SMMC is, once again, owned by Quorum Healthcare and there are several opportunities that will open up. This includes plans to expand, bring new services, and new equipment.
During the celebration, it was also announced that Scenic Mountain Medical Center had received a nationally recognized rating of an ‘A’ as its Hospital Safety Grade as rated by Leapfrog. These grades are assigned to nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals across the nation twice annually. The Safety Grade is the gold standard measure of patient safety.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 30 national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and information from other supplemental data sources. Taken together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.
Yenigella said this grade means that SMMC is providing a quality level of care.
“Patients are leaving the hospital with better outcomes. That tells me that they did not have an infection. They did not have any kind of blood clots, or any patient harm while they are here at the hospital,” he explained.
Within a 200-mile radius of Big Spring there are only 4 hospitals that have a Leapfrog Safety rating of an A. Within an 80-mile radius there is only one hospital that has that rating and that is Scenic Mountain Medical Center in Big Spring.
