BIG SPRING, TX — Last night’s Big Spring City Council meeting was the last one for District 5 Councilman Troy Tompkins who will be rotating out of the position after serving two consecutive terms.
Tompkins told KBest News that it was a bittersweet moment.
“This has been an amazing experience, a lot of work. There’s a lot of preparation that goes into getting ready for these meetings. There are things that come up with constituents, everything from loose dogs to the sewer in the alley is flooding. There are all kinds of things that come up. It is a commitment of time and effort, but it is an honor to serve. It’s worth every minute of it. So, I say it’s bittersweet. I will miss this. I would’ve gladly done another term, but life is busy then I have plenty of other things to do and I will definitely keep myself busy,” said Tompkins.
He also said he wished more people would consider running for office and serving the community.
“It’s a very different perspective to be on this side of the desk and see what’s going on under the hood with the city. The city is filled with very hard-working, very well intentioned, employees and leadership. They do the best they can with what they get to work with,” he continued.
Tompkins told KBest News that there is a constant struggle between people’s willingness to pay taxes and their desire to receive services. It’s a challenge to find a balance that best meets the needs of the community. He went on to say that it’s also important to encourage economic development because if the commercial tax base is grown it will relieve taxes for residents.
Early voting is going on now through April 29th at the Howard County Elections Center, located at 2006 FM 700 in Big Spring. Candidates running for District 5 Councilmember are Tony Scarbrough and Gloria Blackburn. Election Day is May 3, 2025.
