The Big Spring Academic UIL Team brought home the district crown for the seventh time in a row at the District 5-4A Academic Meet held this past Saturday. Unlike past years, the Steers had a harder time with this victory as Levelland proved to be an improved adversary. Big Spring High School ended the contest with 526 sweepstakes points to Levelland’s 413.
“We had to lean on a lot of our returning experience this year,” Academic Coordinator Jennifer Adams stated. “This is a rebuilding year, but the seniors really stepped up and scored some big points.”
For the second consecutive year Madeline Jordan-Hisel paced the journalism team placing first in Feature Writing , second in Editorial Writing, and as well as placing fourth in News Writing and fifth in Copy Editing. Following her appearance in the finals of the Congressional Debate State Meet in January, Julianna Summers placed first in both Poetry Interpretation and Spelling. She also tied for sixth in Literary Criticism.
Not to be outdone, Ashley Melendez placed second in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Spelling, and Literary Criticism. Fellow debate team member Elanore Correa contributed points by bringing home the gold in Informative Extemporaneous Speaking, as well as a third in Literary Criticism, and sixth in Copy Editing.
Others earning gold medals for the Steers included Mariel Chavez in Literary Criticism, J.R. Barker in Prose Interpretation, Kaylee McNalley in Ready Writing, Marley Walker in Headline Writing, and Raiden Paraedez in Current Issues and Events.
Placing in the top three and also earning a spot at the Regional Meet were Keila Reyes 2nd in Persuasive Extemporaneous Speaking and 3rd in Prose Interpretation, Rolando Martinez 3rd in Accounting, Vanya Perez-Ramirez 3rd in Headline Writing, Walker 3rd in Editorial Writing, Braxton Gonzales 2nd in Poetry Interpretation, Jyllian Calixto 2nd in Informative Extemporaneous Speaking, Isabella Sykes 2nd in Prose Interpretation, and Andrea Guerro 3rd in Ready Writing.
Two teams qualified for the Regional Meet by virtue of their first-place team finish, these include; Summers, Melendez, Guerrero and James Pascual in Spelling; Chavez, Melendez, Correa, and Summers in Literary Criticism;
The Speech Team also scored as the top team for the 15th year in a row.
Big Spring also had the second Place Journalism Team and Current Events Team.
17 students in 26 spots qualified for the Regional meet to be held on the campus of Texas Tech April 25th and 26th.
