SCURRY COUNTY, TX – On April 1, 2025, at 5:55 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a crash involving a Hermleigh ISD activity bus at County Road 4114 and County Road 4123. The bus was transporting ten students aged 14 to 17 years. Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash.
The crash occurred as the bus traveled east on CR 4114 and approached a “T” intersection with CR 4123. The road is gravel-covered and unlit, and the driver could not make a left turn due to the bus’s speed. As a result, the bus continued east through the intersection and off the roadway. The driver was cited for unsafe speed.
According to Marc A. Couch, Sergeant with Texas DPS, Unsafe Speed is not alleging the driver was speeding, only that the bus was being operated at a speed greater than was prudent for the conditions of the roadway, lighting, etc.
Hermleigh ISD superintendent, Jessie Ellerbe, released a statement regarding the incident stating:
“Dear Hermleigh ISD Parents,
This morning, one of our Hermleigh ISD activity buses was involved in a one vehicle accident while carrying students to a contest. We are relieved to report that no one was seriously injured. We are thankful to Hermleigh ISD staff, Scurry County Sheriff Department, Fire Department, Emergency Management and EMS for a swift response!
We want to assure you the safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our top priority in the district. Our team responded immediately to ensure that all necessary protocols were followed.
