BIG SPRING, TX — The City of Big Spring held a ribbon cutting for the brand new All-Abilities Playground at the Comanche Trail Park on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The project was a vision of the Dora Roberts Rehabilitation Center.
Susan Himes, Community Services Director and Convention Visitors Bureau Director for the City of Big Spring, explained that this playground has equipment for all kids and accommodates different types of special needs, such as sensory, cognitive, or ambulatory.
“There is a sensory station, there are visual things, and there’s even a sensory pod if a child needs a quiet timeout,” Himes added.
“The ground is made of crushed rubber mats so kids won’t get hurt when they fall. There are sun shades over all the equipment to protect from the Texas sun and the occasional freak rain. The city tried to make the playground as usable as possible for all four seasons,” Himes said.
In addition to this, there is also a cement path around the park for kids to ride their bikes and the city built a new parking lot so there would be lots of space with plenty of ADA parking.
“It’s the largest all-abilities outdoor playground in West Texas,” said Himes.
While Saturday was the official opening day for the playground, the community has already been enjoying it for about a month as finishing touches were being completed.
Himes was at the park the day before the ribbon cutting, “and there were some kids [playing] whose parents told me that their children had never been able to go to a park before,” she said.
