BIG SPRING, TX — Big Spring’s new charter school Pathway Academy recently received $25,000 thanks to their superintendent Dr. Thaddeus McCalister.
Dr. McCalister won 1st place in a pitch contest while participating in the Z Combinator Experience in New York City. The Z Combinator Experience is a program offered by Zeta Charter Schools in New York City. They’ve grown 7 charter schools in the last 10 years. According to Dr. McCalister, that money will be used for their virtual reality program.
“There’s program called PsyGlass that we’re really excited about, where they’ve partnered with professors from MIT, partnered with professors from Ohio State University to provide a science experience for kids through virtual reality. So, instead of learning how the heart functions or what a carotid heart artery looks like on a piece of paper, what you would actually do as a kid at Pathway Academy as you put on some virtual reality goggles and standing next to you would be the professor from MIT or the professor from Ohio State University who is actually explaining it to you as you’re standing inside of a heart that’s pumping,” said Dr. McCalister.
Pathway Academy is set to open this fall in Big Spring. They’ll be temporarily located at Cornerstone Covenant Church, located at 706 E. 12th St. Originally, it was announced that the free charter school would only be serving 7th – 9th grade students in its first year but Dr. McCalister told KBest News that they will be extending into high grades. This fall, Pathway Academy will serve grades 7-12. Applications are being accepted now for the Fall 2025 semester at pathwayhc.org.
Plus, a townhall meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 27th, at 6:30 PM for Pathway Academy families and community members who are interested in learning more about Pathway Academy and their upcoming events. That meeting will be held at Cornerstone Covenant Church at 6:30 PM in the Ark building.
