BIG SPRING, TX — The Youth Leadership Center is a new non-profit organization in Big Spring that aims to empower kids to become leaders.
According to Jewel Claiborne, Executive Director / Founder of YLC, the path to leadership begins at the 5th grade.
“They start as a trailblazer in fifth grade. They get paired with a mentor and they meet weekly and they get a meal they get worship. They get word and they get to meet with their groups and their mentor groups they learn a leadership skill and they practice it at the end of the month at a place in town so that’s why community partners are really important and so once they become young leaders which is sixth grade through eighth grade, then I get to go to camp camp is like the big tada!” said Claiborne.
This is a brand new program in Big Spring and they are accepting registration for grades 5-9. Only 50 students will be accepted in this inaugural year.
According to Jonathan Salazar, Board President for YLC, the organization hopes to reach kids who may be at risk of falling through the cracks due to struggling in school, dealing with trauma, or coming from a broken home.
