BIG SPRING, TX — January is National School Board Appreciation Month. During this week’s meeting of the Big Spring ISD Board of Trustees, board members were presented with gifts by the Big Spring High School’s Student Council and BSISD principals.
Board members are:
Tom Olague, District 1,
Jesse Salazar, District 2,
Julie Harris, District 3,
Tonya Gilstrap-Becker, District 4,
Trent Trinidad, District 5,
Alton McGruder, District 6,
and Fabian Serrano, District 7.
Serrano, BSISD Board President, has been serving on the board for almost 11 years. He doesn’t have any children in the district, but when he joined he felt he could bring his experience from working in high education. Serrano says his favorite thing about serving in the role is seeing how the team works together to make an impact in students’ lives.
Harris has served for 10 years. When asked what her favorite part of serving on board is, she said that she enjoyed visiting with the teachers and students about their goals and needs and then working with the board to make sure those goals are met and needs recognized.
Olague has served for 7 years on the board. He told KBest News that he loves being able to ensure that all kids have the same opportunities.
“Growing up, I didn’t have the same opportunities. A lot of us didn’t get called to see counselors about our future. It’s just the way things were back in the day. Now, there’s no excuse for [anybody]. It’s wide open. As a sophomore [in] dual classes, we pay for your books. We pay for your school. You know, it’s just sad that a lot of kids aren’t taking advantage of it, and I’m trying to get as many kids as I can to take advantage of that so they don’t have to work slaves like their parents and grandparents,” said Olague.
Big Spring ISD will have an election on May 3, 2025 for the board positions of Districts 2, 5, 6, and 7. Anyone wanting to run to serve on the BSISD School Board can submit their candidate filing packets to the filing officer Melissa Tarbet at the BSISD Administration Building now through Feb. 14, 2025.
