FORSAN, TX — Forsan ISD’s Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jason Phillips has stepped down from his position.
He told KBest News that after 31 years of coaching, he felt like it was time for a change.
“You know, I’ve been doing this a really, really long time and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and it was just time to move on and do something else. You know it was not an easy decision. [It was a] decision I prayed about and thought about for several weeks in there, and before I went and talked to the superintendent..I told him, ‘You know I’d love to stay on and keep working, but you know I need to step down from the AD position and the head football position and let somebody else have it,’” he said.
Phillips began his coaching career with Big Spring ISD and has been with Forsan for 20 years.
When asked what he’s enjoyed most about coaching, Coach Phillips said it was a tie between the relationships that he’s built with the kids and the relationships that have been built with the coaches.
“I’ve had some great kids through the years. Forsan kids work hard, play hard, just lots of fun, [with] great attitudes. Then I’ve had some great coaches through the years. We haven’t just had a whole lot of turnover in my tenure except in the last couple of years, just because, you know, I wasn’t the only one getting older, and just the relationships that we’ve had. Some of the best times of my life have been in that coach’s office,” he continued.
Dane Richardson, FISD Superintendent, told KBest News that Coach Phillips has done a tremendous job for Forsan ISD and will be staying on in the role of Dean of Students and Head Girls Softball Coach.
The job opening for a Head Football Coach and possible Athletic Director has been posted through the FISD website, the Region 18 job board and the Texas High School Coaches Association job board. According to Richardson, the job posting will be open through Feb 6th.
Phillips will continue to stay on as interim Athletic Director until someone is hired.
