BIG SPRING, TX — The Big Spring City Council met for a regular meeting on Tuesday night. Council members approved donations to the Police Department and Fire Department.
The Broughton Foundation donated $50,780 to BSPD to purchase drones and their accessories. These items would be used for scene assessments, search and rescue operations, and evidence collection and documentation. BSPD Chief Chad Williams advised that there would be a policy in place prior to use, and officers would be required to have an FAA license to use it. A coordinator will oversee the drone program and only a few officers will receive training to use the equipment. The training is available in the area and is estimated to cost approximately $250 per operator.
The Big Spring Fire Department received a $1,500 donation from Gunsight Mountain Wind Energy. According to BSFD Chief Jay Holt, the money will be used to purchase rescue equipment.
