BIG SPRING, TX — This past spring was an exciting time for high school softball in Howard County with the Coahoma Bulldogettes winning their State Championship and the Forsan Lady Buffs making their debut appearance in the UIL State Softball Tournament. Organizations like the Big Spring Girls Softball Association are an asset in teaching the fundamentals of the game and preparing girls to enter high school softball programs.
According to Board President DJ Gomez, the BSGSA is a recreational league. This local non-profit organization is run by a board of directors. The board, coaches, and dugout helpers are all volunteers. This year the league was able to enroll 186 girls for ages 14 and under. The league runs for 8 weeks beginning in April with an All-Star Tournament in July.
Currently, BSGSA is in the midst of preparing to send four teams to the All-Star Tournament in Odessa. The three-day tournament starts on Thursday, July 11th and runs through Sunday, July 14th.
“It is an all-day all-weekend event. It’s a big tournament. It’s the best of the Permian Basin. They all meet there,” said Gomez.
The teams are from all over West Texas, including Greenwood, Midland, Lubbock, Snyder, and Coahoma – just to name a few.
“So what we do is we go out there. You battle it out to be the best of the West,” he continued.
Gomez went on to say that coaches are responsible for fundraising to cover the cost of the trip for the team, which can range from $3,500 to $6,000.
On Monday, June 24th, a Home Run Derby will be hosted by the BSGSA to help raise money for the organization. This begins at 5:30 PM and will be held at 1700 W. I-20 in Big Spring. Entry fee is $20 per participant and there will be a cash prize for 1st place in 3 age divisions – 10U, 15U, and 16 and above. There will also be a battle between the Big Spring all-star head coaches for a $350 scholarship that will directly benefit their All-Star team. Plus, concessions will also be available during the event.
As of Thursday afternoon, only 10 people had signed up for the event. The deadline to reserve your spot for the Home Run Derby is Sunday, June 23rd. To sign-up, message the Big Spring Girls Softball Association Facebook page or text 432-816-1490.
