An organization based in New Mexico is reaching out to offer a free recreational retreat for veterans and first responders.
Healing America’s Heroes (HAH), located in Ft. Stanton, New Mexico, is an organization dedicated to helping veterans and first responders with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), military sexual trauma (MST), and traumatic brain injury (TBI) through recreational equine and piscatorial programs.
The retreat location is near the mountains and sits on 70 acres of land and can sleep and feed 50 people at a time. Veterans and first responders can take advantage of the retreat and horse and fly fishing program for free.
“We’ really out there by ourselves and it’s really great place just to be peaceful. So, the program is you get assigned a horse at the beginning of the week and then, you know, we have our programs where we’ll spend an hour or a few hours teaching some stuff. Then there’s some time where you’ll have downtime and be able to spend time walking, riding, petting, [or] whatever you wanna do,” explained Robert Crain, Director of Operations for HAH.
Crain went on to say that the horses are old and are hardly ridden, but veterans are able to interact with the horses and it has a therapeutic purpose.
Multiple dates are offered throughout the year for male veterans, female veterans, and first responders. The next date for the male program is June 24-28, 2024. The next female program dates are July 8-12th. The next set of dates available for first responders is Aug. 26-30.
