BIG SPRING, TX — A structure fire was reported yesterday afternoon near 6th and Johnson in Big Spring. First responders received the call at 1:24 PM. Big Spring Fire Department personnel responded to the scene along with EMS and Big Spring Police Officers.
According to Fire Marshal Dan Hendrickson, the fire was in a shed-type structure where a man was living with his dog. He stated that the man was cooking lunch when his dog knocked over a propane burner, which resulted in the fire. Hendrickson advised that the shed was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene.
No evacuations were necessary.
“Fortunately, the way that the wind was blowing it blew [debris from the fire] out to the street across into a vacant lot so the houses adjacent were not affected by this whatsoever. We did have the main portion of the house and we did consider that a close exposure, so we kept a close eye on that while we continue to fight the fire inside of the shed,” said Hendrickson.
He advised that due to the proximity of other buildings in the area, a thermal camera was used to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished.
No injuries were incurred as a result of the fire, but the man was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center as a precaution. In addition to first responders on site, Code Enforcement, Oncor, and Atmos were also notified about the incident.
