BROWNFIELD — Coahoma powerlifters Tres Vasquez and Brandyn Bishop secured a state berth at the Region I meet held in Brownfield on Saturday.
Vasquez placed third in the 132 weight division with a three-lift total of 1,100 pounds of iron. He posted a squat of 430, a bench press of 255, and a deadlift of 415. In the 123 division, Bishop recorded 360 on squat, 225 on bench press, and 365 on deadlift for a total of 950 pounds to finish fourth. Both Bulldog powerlifters met the qualifying weight total to move on to the state competition set for Abilene on Friday, March 22.
After running in a track meet on Thursday and playing in the varsity Bulldog game on Friday, Bryce Davis found enough energy to secure fifth place in his weight class with a three-lift total of 900. Aiden Bryand finished his season by setting two personal records. He completed the meet by lifting a combined total of 1,070 pounds of iron.
Also finishing the season at the regional meet were Giancarlo Maldanado (585 total), Ulises Lugo (560 total), and Reagan Chapman (970 total). After an outstanding season with a team consisting of mostly underclassmen, Coahoma powerlifting coaches Coley Dobbs and Daniel Luna will see most of their competitors return for next year.
