SCURRY COUNTY, TX — Texas DPS Troopers responded to two fatal crashes in Scurry County on a Monday, Feb. 12th.
The first crash occurred at 1:20PM, on FM 1609, 1.5 miles north of Ira, Texas. It involved a 2014 GMC, Sierra, 1500 pickup truck driven by Seth Thomas Boynton, 24-year-old male from Ira, Texas, and 2017 Ford, F-250 pickup truck towing a utility trailer driven by Cameron Scott Johnson, 26-year-old male from Snyder, Texas.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Boynton was traveling south on FM 1609, and Johnson was traveling north. Boynton failed to drive in a single lane and drove into the northbound lane as Johnson’s vehicle approached. Johnson attempted to take evasive action steering left, toward the southbound lane, away from Boynton’s vehicle. Boynton then took evasive action, steering back to the southbound lane, striking Johnson’s truck head on. Boyton’s vehicle caught on fire after the collision and was engulfed in fire.
Boynton was pronounced dead on scene and Johnson was transported to Cogdell Memorial with incapacitating injury in stable condition.
The second crash occurred at 8:30 PM on US Highway 84 near milepost 396, approximately 6 miles north of Snyder. It involved a 2020 Mercedes G-class sports utility vehicle driven by Thi Yen Ngoc Nguyen, 30-year-old female from Woodway, TX, and a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by Victor Manuel Rodriguez Mendez, 45 years old male, from Post, Texas.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Nguyen was traveling north (the wrong way) in the southbound lanes of US 84 and struck Mendez’s vehicle head on. Mendez was pronounced dead at the scene, Nguyen was transported to UMC Lubbock and later pronounced dead.
