Forsan High School’s Journalism and Yearbook class is holding a fundraiser to honor those who have served and raise money for the D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans), Chapter 47 of Big Spring. Memorials and donations will be collected October 17-31.
“This is a cause very close to my heart. I am excited to be able to help raise awareness and give honor to those who have served our country. Not only are we honoring veterans and our service members, but we are raising money to help the D.A.V. support our veterans,” Amanda Duforat, Forsan Journalism/Yearbook Advisor, said.
The fundraiser is open to students, teachers, families, community members, and anybody else who wishes to participate.
“We urge anybody to participate; we want to raise as much as we can for them,” Duforat said. “The D.A.V. is an organization that relies on community support to provide a hand up for local veterans throughout the year.”
Participants can submit the name, rank, and branch of a specific veteran if they wish, or an expression of gratitude. Names and messages will be printed on flags and then displayed in the hallways at Forsan Jr./Sr. High School and Forsan Elementary. In addition, a field of flags will be displayed in front of both schools.
“We are hoping that this fundraiser not only raises much needed support for local veterans, but also serves as a reminder to stop and say thank you to those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” Duforat said.
The D.A.V. helps to provide support services for local veterans such as assistance with everyday necessities, emergent situations, and other situations where a veteran may need a helping hand. The D.A.V. also provides meals during the holidays and gifts throughout the year to help ensure that no local veterans are forgotten.
“The D.A.V. does so much for our local veterans and their support can only continue with community support. It’s important that we not only teach history, but also connect the why to our youth,” Duforat said. “Giving honor to those who have helped shape our nation is something that we need to keep top of mind and projects like this help our youth see the impact a community can make.”
Anybody who would like to say thank you to an active military member or veteran can make a donation as little as $1, however, all donations are accepted. Those wishing to donate and honor a veteran can do so by contacting Amanda Duforat, Journalism/Yearbook Advisor, at 432-213-1825, or by emailing aduforat@forsan.esc18.net. Donations can be mailed to the school at 411 W. 6th Street, Forsan, Texas 79733, sent with a student, or can be picked up.
