BIG SPRING, TX – A Grand Re-Opening Ceremony was held on Thursday afternoon for the Center of Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, located at 1601 W. 11th Pl in Big Spring.
Malik Yenigella, administrator at Scenic Mountain Medical Center, told KBest News that wound care is a critical service that is needed for the community and the patients where they Can get care close to home.
Greg Anderson, Family Nurse Practitioner and head of the center in Big Spring, told KBest News the center is now reopened and ready to treat wounds. Anderson advised that there are a lot of diabetics in the southwest and they end up with wounds on their legs and feet that they intend to treat, but they don’t.
“They’re wounds don’t get well because they don’t heal as well. So, we end up with bigger wounds, bigger problems, but if they had come sooner for us to treat them when they got a little wound then we can salvage,” said Anderson.
He went on to say that most diabetics with wounds and up with amputations. Most people who have an amputation are gone within 5-10 years. Anderson advised that amputations are a significant thing and it’s a complication of diabetes.
“It’s necessary for us to treat wounds early.”
He recommended that if diabetics get a small wound that needs stitches, they ask for a referral to be sent to wound care so that they it can be monitored while they heal. He also advised that wound care is a collaboration between the patient’s care providers.
