BIG SPRING, TX — Ford Motor Company’s Player of the Week program honors six student-athletes in each of the state’s six athletic classifications each week during the 2023 regular season.
Coahoma Receiver Austin Perkins has been named the Built Ford Tough Player of the Week for Class 3A for his outstanding performance during the Howard County Bowl against Forsan held on Friday, Aug. 25, 2023.
Bulldog Head Football Coach Chris Joslin noted that it’s a very prestigious honor, because there’s only one athlete in all of 3A for all over the state of Texas who is awarded.
“Austin had a big night, catching the ball, leading our team in tackles. The cool thing about it, I told our kids it’s a team award. He doesn’t get to do that without the whole group. So with this comes some publicity for our program,” said Coach Joslin.
“Just so happy for Austin because he puts in time all the time, all summer long, all spring long, runs track, and is kinda coming to fruition for him in his senior year,” he continued.
During last week’s game, Perkins had 9 catches, 284 yds, 4 touchdowns, and 1 carry for 9 yards. He was a leading tackler with 12 tackles, 7 of those solo, and 1 fumble recovery.
When asked how he felt , he said it’s a big achievement for most people, and he’s glad to have it, but he feels like winning game is more important.
“I’m glad to have it because [I’m] the third person in Coahoma to ever get it and it’s a big honor,” said Perkins.
The last Coahoma Bulldog to receive a Built Ford Tough Player of the Week for Class 3A was Zack Schneider in 2018.
Mark Richardson, KBest Media Sports Broadcaster and “Voice of the Bulldogs”, has broadcasted each of Coahoma’s football games for the past 9 years. When asked his thoughts about Perkins’ development as a player, Richardson said that it’s been amazing to watch him.
“I’ve called every one of his games. I’ve watched him get bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter. The thing I want to point out about this, obviously this is based on his skill and stats, but there is no finer example of who should deserve this award than Austin Perkins. He’s as good a person off the field as he is on the field and I’m excited for him because his attitude, and his desire, and his passion to play the game the way it was meant to be played,” said Richardson.
As a Built Ford Tough Player of the Week, Perkins is eligible for the Ford Player of the Year for 3A. He will be featured on the Built Ford Tough Player of the Week website along with the five other players of the week chosen from around the state.
