BIG SPRING, TX — In May of this year, Big Spring High School Biology teacher Michelle Cochrane was named the Secondary Teacher of the Year for Big Spring ISD. This week it was announced that Cochrane had also been selected as the Region 18 Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Cochrane teaches Biology, AP Bio, and is a sponsor for the BSHS Student Council. This is her 17th year of teaching and 4th year at BSISD. She told KBest News that she has received recognition as secondary teacher of the year in other districts before coming to Big Spring, but she had never received recognition at a regional level and she was overwhelmed and honored to be chosen.
When asked what her favorite part about teaching is, Cochrane said it was the kids and comradery.
“Just everybody working together for a bigger purpose. Sometimes it’s not always about what you’re educationally supposed to teach the kid, it’s sometimes just the life lesson and being that person in their life. When you come back to see you it just lights up your day. Just knowing that they care as much about you as you do about them,” she continued.
Cochrane told KBest News one of the things she’s looking forward to in the upcoming school year is getting to see her first class graduate. The current senior class is a group of students that she’s been able to work with for the past four years and she’s excited to see them continue to grow through the year.
Big Spring ISD Superintendent Jay McWilliams told KBest News that Cochrane is one of the many great teachers at BSISD and her peers are thrilled for her, noting that it was something that was well deserved.
