BIG SPRING, TX — The Steer Youth Football and Cheer Program has begun to prepare for the upcoming season.
The program serves ages 4 through 12. Ages 4 and 5 play flag football, 6 and 7 is Freshmen division which is Intro to Tackle, ages 8 through 12 play “real football”. The cheer program runs through the same age divisions and they do competitions. Currently there are approximately 80 kids in football and 46 participating in cheer.
This year, the Steer Youth Football program transitioned from the Permian Basin Youth Football league to a larger league called the American Youth Football League.
According to Shane Rios, Athletic Director for the Steer Youth Football Program, a lot of the local rec leagues in the little towns like Stanton, Big Spring, Monahans, had been dissolved and were shrinking. An area league, the Permian Basin Youth Football League was created to allow teams to play in the area. Now that they are in the AYFL, they now have a larger area that they can compete in.
Jennifer Hart, Chairperson for the program and Varsity Cheer Coach, advised that girls cheer on the sidelines for the games and go to competitions.
“We have a chance to compete at Regionals, which takes place in Arizona. If we feel like we can get the girls there, then that’s definitely something we’re hoping to accomplish this year,” said Hart.
In addition to preparing for competition, the teams are also tasked to raise money to help cover the costs of participation. This year they are hosting the First Annual Steer Nation Pie Showdown that will run through July 31st. This showdown involves football coaches facing off against the cheer coaches in different age divisions. The coach who raises the most money will pie the defeated coach in the face on August 1st on Facebook.
First game of the season will be on August 12th against the West Texas Empire from Odessa. The rivalry game will be on September 30th against the Howard County Hawks.
